5 Things to Do in Northern Michigan During the Fall

If you’re anything like me, part of you wants to cry about summer coming to a close with those warm sunny days fading into the rearview mirror, but the other part of you is getting super giddy about the crisp fall days ahead and all the cozy vibes and autumn activities they bring. I’ve spent about as much of my summer as I could up in northern Michigan, specifically in the Torch Lake and Traverse City area, enjoying days on the lake with family and friends, boating and soaking in the sunshine. But the truth is, I love #NoMi in all its seasons. So I’m here to give you some ideas and suggestions of things to do and see up north coming into fall, because exploring and enjoying this beautiful state doesn’t need to be limited to just a few months of the year!

  1. Take a boat ride out on the lake to enjoy the color change from the water. While the nights are starting to get quite chilly, we still get some pretty warm days in the fall that are great for getting out on the water. Take a blanket and a jacket if you need, pack a cooler with some snacks and fun fall drinks, and set sail to enjoy the view. It’s the best of both worlds - enjoying summer and fall activities at the same time!

  2. Go horseback riding at Ranch Rudolf in Traverse City. If you enjoy being around animals and getting out into nature, head on out for a leisurely trail ride through the woods where you'll get up close and personal with the fall foliage. We did this last year and as someone who absolutely loves horses and riding, it was such a treat! Ranch Rudolf also has a ton of other activities to offer year-round plus lodging options and a restaurant.

  3. Go on a winery/brewery tour. There are companies that offer guided tours and provide transportation, but you can also create your own tour as long as you have a DD! Whether you choose to meander up Old Mission Peninsula between the bays or go up Leelanau Peninsula further west, there are plenty of great stops to choose from that offer all the wine (or beer or cider depending where you go) you could wish for with stunning views of the vineyards over the lake. Some of my favorite spots to hit are Mari Vineyards, Hop Lot Brewing Company, Bowers Harbor Vineyards, and Bonobo Winery. Next on my list to check out is Black Star Farms.

  4. Go to Short's Brewing Company. Now, I don't list this in my winery/brewery tour suggestion for two reasons: first, Short's pub is in Bellaire which is quite a distance away from the other stops I mentioned on the peninsulas; second, it's a must-experience activity that deserves its own place in my list. They have an entire menu full of the most delicious food and a beer to please everyone. It's honestly one of my favorite restaurants (of all time, anywhere)! They've often got live music and after you eat, you can check out the Short's Mart for some cool merch. I just really love this place.

  5. Have a cozy fall night in. If you've got a cottage or rented a house to stay at, spark up a fire in the fireplace or take it outside to the fire pit. Bundle up with some blankets and bust out a deck of cards. Nothing caps a day #upnorth like a night full of euchre in my opinion. You might even want to pop open a bottle of your favorite wine you brought back from the vineyards. Sit back and enjoy your relaxing evening!

As a couple of tips, peak fall colors in this area are expected to occur between September 25th and October 15th. Also, be sure to pack in layers since the days may still be quite warm but the nights can get rather cool. Let me know what some of your favorite fall activities are in the comments!
